Army of James IV of Scotland, 1488-1513

Postby Lord Alisk » Wed Nov 28, 2012 8:32 pm

James IV is probably my favourite Scottish king (indeed, probably my favourite king of the late middle ages, Charles the Bold only being a duke, and all), and was almost certainly the most able, which makes the defeat at Flodden all the more tragic – James had been able to fully unite Scotland during his reign, meaning that the army that was destroyed at Flodden was more-or-less representative of the whole kingdom – previous kings had not been able to extensively tap the resources of the highlands and islands before him, with much of the 15th century being involved with conflict between the Stuart monarchs and their rather recalcitrant vassals in the highlands, islands and along the borders (they probably fought ‘internal’ foes more than the English, I hasten to add!). I always felt WAB sadly neglected Scottish armies - using the same limited lists for the Wars of Independence at the very end of the thirteenth century right until the Flodden campaign of 1513, and giving more period specific lists would be a good idea (or, to put it another way, one would not fight a Wars of Roses battle with a list designed for the English army of the Bannockburn campaign...)

Anyway, this is a ‘first draft’ as it were, and no doubt needs much tweaking (hopefully less than my Swiss list – we shall see!). I must add that this list has seen no play-testing at all, I do not own a Scottish army, and I have not had the chance to use Swiss and/or Burgundians as stand-ins. So apologies on that level. It is mainly based on the general understanding I have of Scotland at the end of the middle ages; way back in the mists of time (well, 2007-9 anyway) I did a series of undergraduate modules on Scotland (and England and France) in the 14th and 15th century. Real specialists are greatly desired for input!

This list could easily represent armies of the Scottish kings earlier in the 15th century. The main difference should be limiting the number of highland troops (perhaps 0-1 highland nobles, 0-2 highland clansmen and 0-2 highland skirmishers). Tweaks might be the reducing the number of cannons a maximum of 1 (though James II was a noted gun-nut, and was blown up by one in 1460, so allowing loads of guns could be justified), and by not allowing plate barding and hand guns, and the like.

Anyway, constructive criticism welcomed!

All best,

David.

Hello Steve,

regarding miniatures, they can be a bit of a problem...

For most Lowland troops, using English Wars of the Roses models would be completely fine, as there was virtually no difference in terms of costume.

This company do very nice late 13th/early 14th century Scottish models, which might be OK for the 15th century if you weren't a stickler for strict historical accuracy: http://www.ebobminiatures.com/products/rebellion.htm

Also, I have seen somewhere on the internet (can't remember where exactly) someone kit-bashing Perry Mahdists with Wars of the Roses infantry, using the legs from the mahdists (to give a kilt effect) with the upper body of the mediaeval models, with a mix of Mahdist and mediaeval arms. It looked really good, and not that difficult to pull off.

Hope that helps!

All best,

David.

Here they are! The really clever plastic converted Scots: http://warlordgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=8662

If you can pull this off, that is surely by far the cheapest way to make highland troops.

All best,

David.
