Cavalry long spears

Postby youngster » Fri Jan 11, 2013 11:01 am

Hi all

Had a game a few days back in which some cavalry armed with long spears charged into a warband partially occupying a wood. About a third of the cavalry line had to enter the wood to get into contact.

I was a little surprised to then find out there was no 'clear terrain' restriction on long spears used by charging cavalry (unlike every other spear-like weapon used by mounted). Is this an oversight, or intentional?

Couple of related questions:
1) If the cavalry were using weapons specified as effective only in clear terrain, would it just be the figures in the wood restricted from using them to full effect, or the whole rank of figures in contact?
2) Is there any penalty (other than movement and some weapon restrictions) on mounted troops fighting in woods? Disruption, maybe?

Thanks

No oversight, though I could be persuaded into a rethink!

1/ Just the figures in the wood.
2/ No depth bonus, if applicable, and light infantry will take care of most horsemen in difficult ground.

Thanks for the response.

As far as persuading you about a rethink - here goes:
- cavalry long spear bonus, like those of xyston/kontos/lance, depends on momentum built up by the horse moving at speed (otherwise why do you only get the bonus when charging/countercharging?)
- a rider concentrating on avoiding trees/potholes/rocks/soft ground (and also presumably on maintaining some sort of formation) will struggle to build up that momentum. Weapon length is immaterial.

(Come to think of it, it makes more sense to shift the 'clear terrain' restriction from throwing spears to long spears. Throwing spear bonus is based on tactical doctrine, not a mount's momentum.)

Cheers

He is very convincing. Give more realistic feeling of play.
